Still Lifes on National Motives. Jaanus Samma

25

Editor: Kai Lobjakas

This book is a companion to an exhibition of the same name in which its initiator artist Jaanus Samma observes the use of ethnographic and national patterns and images in Estonian applied art and prints in the 1930s to the 1950s on both sides of the communist takeover, gesturing to signs and symbols common to both eras. These are periods that are usually seen as opposites: the 1930s “silent era” under a home-grown authoritarian leader and the Soviet period after WWII.
