Classics. Leesi Erm

10

Editor: Anne Tiivel

A graduate of the State School of Arts and Crafts’s textile programme and later a student of loom weaving, Leesi Erm started appearing at exhibitions in 1939. She was awarded the honorary title of People’s Artist in the Estonian SSR period. She also taught for more than 20 years at ERKI, the State Art Institute that was the forerunner of today’s Academy of Arts. Her unique-looking works, largely produced under the vigilant eye of the Soviet regime, attained a high artistic and technical calibre. The rugs and other textiles created over five decades tell the tale of Estonian applied art. The catalogue accompanies an exhibition of the same name.
