Classics. Evi Mardna

Editor: Airi Ligi

Evi Mardna’s works have had a weighty role in Estonian ceramics. Throughout her career as an artist, she has focused on the human form. In the days of the Singing Revolution where Estonia regained its independence, her humorous, occasionally grotesque ceramic sculptures took on an extraordinary immediacy and came to symbolize universal qualities in the eyes of many. Mardna succeeded in moulding her occupation-era experiences and perceptions into art that struck a chord with the public. The witty titles added another dash of spice, and laughter through tears suggested a possible route for graceful distance from the tragedies of the past. It is hard to find other Estonian ceramic art with so powerful a social dimension. The catalogue is a companion to an exhibition of the same name.
